My new hero

I take the "L" to work in the morning and every day when the train pulls up I think, "Okay, will some nice person give me their seat today or will I have to squish in here and hope like crazy that I don't take a tumble?" Well this morning, my faith in the kindness of strangers was renewed.

I stepped onto the train which, of course, was jammed to capacity. I found myself standing in front of two twenty-something girls who were sitting down. As usual, they both looked me up and down and went back to reading their respective Red Eye papers. That's when another twenty-something girl a few rows back saw me. She motioned for me to come sit down but by then the train was moving. I smiled and acknowledged her but couldn't get to the seat.

Well, at the next step, this woman stands up and literally ushers me to her seat. Then she turns to the two girls who had been sitting in front of me and says, "Seriously! You two should be ashamed of yourselves!"

I'm telling you, this woman is my new hero. Wouldn't it be amazing if more people were willing to say what's on their mind and do something nice for a total stranger? It really makes you think...the simplest act of random kindness can really go a long way.
