Weekend in New England

The boys at Fenway

Mac and Anne at the Cooke House

At the Newport Gulls game

The infamous lobsters

Okay, so maybe it was more like a week, but I'll use any excuse to name a post after a Barry Manilow song!

We just returned last night from a fantastic trip out to Boston and Newport. We had a great time in Boston visiting all the historical sites, showing Mac the city and meeting up with some old friends for dinner and drinks. In Newport, we spent a lot of time strolling down memory lane, breathing in the ocean air and running the numbers to figure out how we can afford a house here someday! We really do love New England - especially Newport - and were so happy to be able to take Mac along and show him some of our favorite things.

This vacation was also a huge learning experience for us about what it means to go on a trip with a baby. It was our first official "Summa Family Vacation" without having anyone to help us out on the receiving end and wow...it was eye opening! As most of you know, Dan and I are not people who like to sit still for very long. We're constantly on the move - especially on our vacations. So needless to say, it was definitely a learning experience to find out that Mac doesn't necessarily want to move at our pace.

For example, Dan and I were so excited to go pick out our lobsters in Newport, have them steamed and then sit down for a delicious lunch. But as soon as we walked outside to eat, Mac was over it and wanted to go home. So Dan and I took turns taking Mac on a walk outside the restaurant while the other person frantically cleaned and shelled the lobster so we could eat. We always say that we really do have the most well-behaved baby around and because of that I think we sometimes forget that he IS still a baby! Just another one of those things about parenthood that you learn as you go along...I think vacations moving forward will be great, but we'll definitely be planning more around Mac's schedule and less around our own!
