Every parent has a "thing" for their kids - something they really want them to do that they, most likely, did not. For some parents its sports. For others it's music. For me it's language, specifically Spanish. This started long before we moved to California. As soon as Mac was old enough, I put him into a program that offered a bilingual education. I really want the kids to be immersed at a young age so they can hopefully become proficient.
Last night at the dinner table, I got my first glimpse of the progress they've been making over the past year in particular. Mac and Paige started with their heads and proceeded to name every single part of their bodies in Spanish. I was amazed. And not because they're smart (all our kids are smart, truly) but because they did it without even stopping to think. It was complete second nature and it was amazing.
Now, I'm mildly troubled that someday soon they'll be able to converse and I won't have a clue what they're saying. I imagine it will go something like this...
Mac (in Spanish): "Do you want to check out that party with me tonight, Paige? It's supposed to be stellar."
Paige (in Spanish): "Totes. But make sure we tell Mom we have to go to the library to study."
Me (in English): "You guys wanna go to a movie tonight with me and your Dad?"
Mac & Paige (Eye rolling - universal language of "Duh, Mom, no way will we be seen with you in public."
