My sister, Laura, has always been a crazy animal lover. Ever since I can remember she wanted to study animals, read books about animals and for a while she actually wanted to be an animal. That's why it's such a sweet surprise for me to see Paige taking after her auntie. The girl loves animals, insects, birds, dare I say rodents. When we were hiking one weekend, she found a baby desert mouse that was dying. She picked it up, started sobbing and refused to leave it until we convinced her it was on it's way to heaven.
Today, we finally got some much-needed rain and the snails were out in full effect. As we were walking out of school, Paige noticed that someone had stepped on one of the snails. She immediately started sobbing to the point where a teacher came out to ask if everything was okay. Paige said, "Who hurt one of God's creatures?!?" That's when I started tearing up, not at the demise of the snail but at the compassion of the big-hearted, beautiful little girl crying in front of me. I hope her heart isn't always so easily broken, but I love that she's so sensitive and cares so much for the tiniest things.
