The big blackout

"When The Lights Go Down In The City" is a song about San Francisco. Yet somehow I'm finding it very applicable to San Diego as well.

Last Thursday, the movers arrived with all of our things. I was thrilled to finally have the essentials (ie - towels, sheets, can openers, etc.) at our house. Everything was off the truck by about 3pm, which was great since I was now face to face with 100+ boxes of our belongings. I was also entertaining the maintenance man, who had arrived to fix our dishwasher, which was backing up into the sink. I was also trying to keep Mac and Paige from repacking all of the boxes I had just unpacked. I was just about to put on a movie for the kids when all the power in the house went off. I looked over at Curtis (the maintenance guy) who said we must have blown a fuse. As it turns out, Curtis was wrong. Very, very wrong. In fact, all of Southern California and part of Arizona had just lost power. And were projected to be without power for the next 24 hours.

I wasn't upset about the lights. I wasn't upset about the TV. I wasn't even upset that I had to start frantically unpacking boxes labeled "CONDO" in search of a flashlight.  I was upset about the fish. Yes, the fish. If you'll recall, Dan went fishing with my Dad in Alaska back in July and we have 80lbs of salmon, halibut and crab in our freezer (pause to take all this in, please.)
80lbs of seafood. Yep, it's impressive.

Now you can understand my sheer panic at the thought of 80lbs of seafood defrosting all over my new kitchen.

After several hours of plotting how to save the fish (Buy coolers! Wait, all the stores are closed due to said power outage! Damn it!) the power magically turned back on around 1am on Friday. I think God heard my frantic prayers and decided that letting all that fish go to waste would just be a crying shame (insert loaves and fishes joke here.)

We're now almost done unpacking and finally have Internet access at our house (hooray!) More updates to come soon with pictures of all the fun things we've been doing outside of the chaos!
